Washington–October 22, 2019–Crowell & Moring announced today that Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis, R-Fla., has become the fifth member of U.S. Congress to request a Global Magnitsky investigation into Kuwaiti officials over charges of human rights violations against Marsha Lazareva, an Orthodox Christian business leader who spent 474 days in a Kuwait prison on false charges.

New York – October 4, 2019: In October 2018, plaintiff Waters Corporation filed for a preliminary injunction against Crowell & Moring’s client, Agilent, for it to cease selling InstantPCTMreagent, which is used during the development of biopharmaceuticals or biologics. Oral arguments were held last December. On Friday, September 20, 2019, the District of Delaware denied Waters’ motion for a preliminary injunction. 

The Business Guide to Trade and Investment—Volume II—International Investment has been translated into Chinese and was unveiled at a panel discussion held by the International Law Institute, International Chamber of Commerce and the Landing Law office on September 23 in Shanghai.

New York – September 18, 2019 – S. Starling Marshall is joining Crowell & Moring’s New York office as a partner in the firm’s Tax and Litigation groups, strengthening the firm’s ability to help clients resolve tax disputes with the federal government and its civil trial capabilities in New York.

Washington – September 3, 2019: Crowell & Moring has achieved Mansfield 2.0 Certification status for 2019. The Mansfield Rule measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, lawyers of color, and LGBTQ+ lawyers — at least 30 percent of the candidate pool — for significant leadership and governance roles in the firm (for example, practice group leaders and management board) as well as promotions to equity partner and senior-level lateral hiring.

Irvine, Calif. — August 15, 2019: The Daily Journal has named Derek Hahn to the “Top 40 Under 40” California lawyers list. The California-based legal publication’s annual list recognizes the achievements of lawyers under the age of 40.

Washington – July 26, 2019: The National Law Journal has named David (Dj) Wolff to its list of “2019 D.C. Rising Stars.” The award honors attorneys in the D.C. area who are “innovators, developing unique practice niches, amassing robust books of business, demonstrating strong leadership qualities, showing expertise in litigation or transactional work, and committing themselves to pro bono, charitable, and professional volunteer work.”

Washington – July 17, 2019: Crowell & Moring has been named one of the “Best Law Firms for Women” by Working Mother for the eighth consecutive year. The firm is among 60 firms recognized for using best practices to recruit, retain, promote and develop women lawyers.

Washington – July 12, 2019:The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled this week that Baltimore’s practice of prohibiting plaintiffs who settle police misconduct cases from speaking about the events precipitating their cases, on pain of losing half their settlement proceeds, violates the First Amendment. The decision in Overbey v. Mayor of Baltimore holds that these non-disparagement clauses—essentially gag orders—are tantamount to the payment of “hush money” to keep victims quiet, and are unconstitutional and unenforceable. Overbey v. Mayor of Baltimore was brought by Ashley Overbey Underwood, a woman who was denied half of her settlement award after responding to negative online comments about her settlement, as had been reported in a local newspaper. After the City learned she had defended herself by describing her experience of being brutalized by Baltimore police, it withheld half her promised proceeds. Overbey was joined as a co-plaintiff in the case by the Baltimore Brew, a news organization that claimed it was denied its First Amendment right to obtain newsworthy public information from victims of police abuses.
