 San Francisco – November 5, 2025: Crowell & Moring represented Farcast, a San Francisco-based startup pioneering advanced satellite User Terminals, in connection with an expanded commercial relationship and a $5 million equity investment from Telesat (Nasdaq and TSX: TSAT), one of the world’s largest and most innovative satellite operators. Under the agreement, Telesat will also appoint a member of the Farcast board of directors to support the company’s alignment with the strategic goals of the Telesat Lightspeed program.

Chicago – October 29, 2025: Crowell & Moring secured a complete dismissal with prejudice of a proposed class action suit on behalf of Mondelēz, LLC in the Northern District of Illinois.

Doha – October 28, 2025: Thomson Reuters’ Asian Legal Business has named Crowell & Moring the “Arbitration Law Firm of the Year” at the Middle East Law Awards.

Election Day 2025 included two high-profile elections that determined who will serve as the next state attorney general for the Commonwealth of Virginia and for the State of New Jersey. Former Virginia Delegate Jay Jones, a Democrat, was elected the next Virginia Attorney General and in New Jersey, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, was elected New Jersey’s next governor. Governor-Elect Sherrill is expected to appoint a Democrat as the next New Jersey Attorney General.

On October 29, 2025, the attorneys general of Florida, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Montana (the “State AGs”) jointly issued letters to three sustainability groups asserting that their plastics recycling initiatives may violate state and federal antitrust and consumer protection laws.

As part of a comprehensive plan to ensure that EU Member States achieve “defense readiness” by 2030, the European Commission has proposed a package of measures to facilitate public and private investments in defense by simplifying legal frameworks relevant to defense. The landscape of AI governance and regulation is shifting. The Administration remains committed to exercising a heavy hand in AI, including by banning the U.S. government’s procurement of so-called “woke AI,” intervening in the development of data centers and the export of the AI technology stack, imposing an export fee for certain semiconductors to China, and assuming a stake in a U.S. semiconductor company. State legislatures are also racing to implement their own regulations, particularly around AI’s use in critical areas, such as healthcare, labor and employment, and data privacy. The many sources of regulation raise the specter of a fragmented compliance environment for businesses. Much has been made in the legal press and elsewhere following litigation funder Burford Capital’s announcement of its intention to purchase minority stakes in U.S. law firms. Since, except in a few specific U.S. jurisdictions, legal ethical rules prohibit actual ownership of law firms by non-lawyers, Burford was apparently referring to a structure known as “Management Service Organizations” or MSOs. The MSO structure for law firms entails a law firm essentially splitting into two parts: one part being the legal service providing, client-facing portion and the other part being the MSO, which will take over all other law firm functions: administration, accounting, technology, recruiting, HR, real estate, etc. – anything not directly related to the practice of law. As with any other vendor, the MSO is paid a fee for providing these services.
