Howard Michael

Howard Michael is a co-chair of Crowell & Moring's Technology & Brand Protection Group. With nearly 25 years of litigation and counseling experience in the fields of trademarks, copyrights, advertising and trade secrets, Howard represents many of the world’s largest companies and supports several of the world’s most famous brands. A seasoned courtroom veteran who advises on transactional and prosecution matters, Howard represents clients in a wide range of industries, including social media, data security and privacy, alternative energy solutions, waste disposal, apparel, banking and finance, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, electrical devices, food and beverage, cargo solutions, and home and consumer goods.

Among his other areas of practice, Howard has a particular focus on high-stakes, fast-moving trademark counterfeiting matters. He works closely with the courts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Marshals Service to stop counterfeit goods from entering the country, obtains injunctive relief, and coordinates the ex parte seizures of counterfeit goods.

His many other cases involve virtually every area of intellectual property, including trademark, copyright and patent infringement, false advertising, unfair competition, trademark dilution, and trade dress. He manages trademark portfolios for many of the largest brands and appears regularly in federal court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He is also regularly asked to speak on topical trademark issues.

Applying an extremely well-rounded litigation and transactional perspective, Howard thinks forward to identify and avoid potential pitfalls and areas of controversy.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Howard was a shareholder at Brinks Gilson & Lione.
