For nearly two decades, Ashley R. Riveira has been a trusted advisor to global clients navigating complex cross-border business disputes. Renowned for her deep experience in international arbitration and litigation, Ashley delivers strategic counsel at every stage—from pre-contractual risk assessment to representation in high-stakes commercial and investment arbitration, and through enforcement or annulment proceedings.

Ashley’s experience spans all major arbitral institutions and a diverse range of industries, including defense, financial services, hospitality, manufacturing, media, mining, logistics, supply chain, and technology. Her clients value her ability to craft tailored solutions for intricate legal challenges in international contexts.

Recognized as one of Latinvex’s “Top 100 Female Lawyers,” Ashley is also a leader in pro bono advocacy. She currently co-chairs Crowell’s Preserving a Free and Open Press Initiative, has successfully represented asylum applicants, and has helped upgrade discharge characterizations for U.S. service members.

Representative Matters

  • Representing the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC) regarding its NAFTA claim against the U.S. government for damages of at least $1.3 billion CAD concerning APMC’s lost investment in the Keystone XL pipeline (Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission v. United States).
  • Represented a multinational joint venture in securing a $494 million award against an Egyptian state entity, and defeating a $500 million counterclaim, with respect to the unlawful termination of a contract to build a port in Damietta, Egypt. The arbitration was conducted under the ICC Rules of Arbitration. (DIPCO v. Damietta Port Authority)
  • Advising an American hospitality company in a commercial arbitration under the ICC Rules of Arbitration, governed by U.S. and Lebanese law.
  • Represented an Egyptian consortium and Kuwaiti supply chain management company in an $80 million commercial arbitration brought by a South Korean supplier under the ICC Rules of Arbitration.
  • Represented an American company in an ICDR arbitration regarding the enforcement of a supply chain contract.
  • Representing a Russian national in a $100 million UNCITRAL arbitration against the State of Kuwait. (Lazareva v. Kuwait)
  • Successfully defended a Middle Eastern client in a $40 million shareholder dispute with a Hong Kong claimant under the ICC Rules of Arbitration.
  • Represented a Canadian uranium mining company in its dispute with the Government of Mongolia and secured an award of damages for $100 million in respect of the illegal expropriation of its licenses in Mongolia. (Khan Resources Inc. v. Mongolia)
  • Represented an American gold mining company against El Salvador in an ICSID arbitration arising out of the government's improper refusal to issue various environmental licenses and an exploitation concession. (Pac Rim v. El Salvador)
  • Represented U.S. investors in a CAFTA-DR arbitration against the Government of the Dominican Republic relating to the expropriation of a residential and resort (Ballantine v. Dominican Republic)
  • Represented an Italian investor in a dispute against Lithuania in an UNCITRAL arbitration under the Italy-Lithuania BIT. The dispute arose in relation to that State's unfair and inequitable treatment of the investor's investment in the country's alcohol industry. (Bosca v. Lithuania).
  • Represented an Internet registry services company in a dispute under the ICDR International Arbitration Rules against the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), arising out of ICANN’s improper refusal to award a top-level domain name (ICM Registry v. ICANN)
  • Defeated a summary judgment motion by a DC Halfway House in litigation arising from murder of 9-year old girl by a previously released resident. (Smith v. Hope Village, Inc., 481 F. Supp.2d 172)
  • Represented victims of terrorism in before the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission arising from the Pan Am Flight 73 attack in Karachi, Pakistan (Patel, et. Al v. Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)
