Washington – November 24, 2021: Six members of Crowell & Moring’s International Dispute Resolutions Group will participate in panels in Washington Arbitration Week 2021, a forum on international arbitration for the Washington, D.C. legal community and the international and foreign community connected to it.  

Washington – July 20, 2021: Crowell & Moring’s International Dispute Resolution Group has been included in the 14th edition of Global Arbitration Review's GAR 100, a guide to the top 100 law firms with international arbitration capabilities. GAR is one of the leading journals of public and private arbitration.

Washington – July 1, 2021: Latinvex has named Ian A. Laird, co-chair of Crowell & Moring’s International Dispute Resolution Group, as one of Latin America’s Top 100 Lawyers. The list is developed by Latinvex’ editorial and research staff using data from their annual survey of international law firms, as well as publicly available data. This is the third consecutive year Laird has been selected for the list.

For over 18 months, COVID-19 has relentlessly impacted businesses and commercial relationships in Latin America. In an effort to prevent the virus’s spread, governments across the region implemented lockdowns, gradual phased re-openings, and several other measures. With the recent spread of the Delta variant and vaccination rates remaining low compared to the United States, Canada and much of Europe, the region is expected to continue to experience outbreaks, and governments may be forced to impose further COVID-related restrictions.

Despite the challenges of 2020, major international arbitration institutions reported a record number of new registered cases. As travel restrictions inhibited cross-border travel, lockdowns were issued around the globe, and many industries began working remotely, arbitral bodies adeptly transitioned to fully electronic filing systems, organized remote hearings, and issued COVID-19 guidance. These changes enabled parties to continue resolving their disputes without major disruption and have set the institutions up for another busy year in the dispute resolution world.

Mining companies have undoubtedly faced a new wave of resource nationalism over the past several years. In fact, Ernst & Young ranked resource nationalism as the number one risk facing mining and metals companies worldwide for 2011-2012 and for 2012-2013, and as the number three risk for 2013-2014.

The event will once again be held at the beautiful and historic National Building Museum. Their theme is Women in Politics, and they will be honoring U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the WBA Woman Lawyer of the Year. Past recipients of the award include Florence King, Elizabeth Dole, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and many more. Keynote remarks will be given by Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Women's Global Issues, U.S. Department of State.

Over the past twenty years, the alumnae Celebrations have drawn HLS women from all over the world from a vast range of fields including law, business, academia, government, politics, non-profit work, and journalism and the arts, to name just a few. Celebration 55 is the first alumnae Celebration since Dean Elena Kagan '86 became the Law School's dean and the first to focus on a particular theme: women and leadership in all its many guises.

Washington D.C. is the epicenter of investment arbitration. It has the headquarters of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), law firms specialized in investment arbitration, public international law and international commercial arbitration, international organizations, United States federal agencies specialized in investment arbitration, embassies, vibrant law schools, NGOs and think tanks. Washington D.C. Arbitration Week (WAW) is being launched to provide an organic D.C. forum in international arbitration for its legal community and the international and foreign community connected to it. WAW will further advance the analysis and discussion of developments reflected in arbitral awards, treaties and international instruments at the forefront of international arbitration.
