Crowell & Moring and ACLU of Maryland Achieve Victory in Removal of the Last Confederate Statue on Public Grounds in Maryland

Washington – September 16, 2021: The Talbot County Council has adopted a resolution to remove the last Confederate statue remaining on public grounds in Maryland. This is a change of position for the Council and follows a lawsuit filed by Crowell & Moring and the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland. The resolution, passed on September 14, 2021 with a 3-2 vote, orders the movement of the Talbot Boys statue from the Easton courthouse to a private park in Virginia “as soon as is practicable.”

Raising the Bar: New York Expands Consumer Protection Law with FAIR Business Practices Act

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed into law the most significant update to New York’s consumer protection law in 45 years — the Fostering Affordability and Integrity through Reasonable Business Practices Act, or FAIR Business Practices Act — expanding the scope of the state’s authority to now challenge unfair and abusive business practices. The measure, backed by New York Attorney General (“AG”) Letitia James and signed on December 19, 2025, amends New York’s General Business Law § 349, giving regulators new tools to protect consumers and promote fair marketplace practices.

USOPC Ramping Up Trademark Enforcement as Paris Summer Olympics Approach

With opening ceremonies set to begin, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (the “USOPC”) sent a strong reminder that it strictly enforces its trademarks and protects against ambush-style marketing.  On July 19, the USOPC sued sports beverage company Prime Hydration, LLC (“Prime Hydration”), which was founded in 2022 by YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul, for allegedly infringing USOPC’s trademarks with Olympic-themed advertising. Filed in the District of Colorado,[1] the complaint alleges that Prime Hydration improperly used phrases such as “Olympic,” “Olympian,” “Team USA,” and “Going for Gold” on advertising and packaging for its beverages featuring Olympic basketball athlete Kevin Duran.
