A New Day for EJ: Environmental Justice with an ESG Twist

Webinar | 03.04.21, 8:00 AM EST - 9:00 AM EST

Please join members of Crowell & Moring’s Environment and Natural Resources Group, with special guest speaker Patricia Spitzley, Deputy Redevelopment Manager and Director of Government Relations for the RACER Trust, for a webinar as they explore the Biden Administration’s focus on environmental justice through an ESG lens.

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are putting environmental justice (“EJ”) centerstage as they fill out their Administration. EJ as a policy focus is not limited to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; rather, EJ principles can be found throughout the cross-sectional environment, social, and governance (“ESG”) space, which is of increasing importance to investors, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Companies must stay abreast of these issues or risk both missing out on valuable opportunities and facing increasing enforcement actions.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • The origins and evolution of EJ
  • How the Administration plans to employ EJ principles throughout the Executive Branch
  • Factoring EJ into the corporate ESG framework
  • What to expect on the ground for new and existing projects with EJ implications

But that does not tell the entire story. The Administration remains committed to exercising a heavy hand in AI, including by banning the U.S. government’s procurement of so-called “woke AI,” intervening in the development of data centers and the export of the AI technology stack, imposing an export fee for certain semiconductors to China, and assuming a stake in a U.S. semiconductor company. State legislatures are also racing to implement their own regulations, particularly around AI’s use in critical areas, such as healthcare, labor and employment, and data privacy. The many sources of regulation raise the specter of a fragmented compliance environment for businesses. This webinar will delve into the Administration’s AI strategy, going beyond the headlines to analyze:...
