Washington, D.C. – June 2, 2016: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that two partners, Thomas A. Lorenzen and Michael J. Songer, have been named to the 2016 list of National Law Journal "Trailblazers & Pioneers." Washington, D.C.-based Lorenzen was featured in the “Energy & Environmental Trailblazers” and Songer, also based in the Washington, D.C. office, was named among the “Intellectual Property Trailblazers.” Published in May, both lists feature attorneys who have made significant impacts in various aspects of legal work, have demonstrated a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, and have achieved remarkable successes.
Lorenzen, who worked previously under both the Bush and Obama administrations at the DOJ, was honored as a trailblazer by the National Law Journal because, “He spent nearly 10 years as assistant chief of the Environment and Natural Resources Division, where he oversaw the government’s defense of all EPA rules.” Lorenzen comments, “Most of the major environmental cases that have to do with EPA rulemaking were under my supervision. Massachusetts v. EPA, which established the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases, was probably the most prominent.” The publication also noted that Lorenzen supervised the cases reviewing the Bush Administration’s New Source Review reform rules and the case in which the D.C. Circuit invalidated the Clean Air Mercury Rule.
The publication recognized Songer, who serves as co-chair of Crowell & Moring's Intellectual Property Group, as a trailblazer due to his role as lead trial counsel in DuPont v. KOLON. National Law Journal highlights that, “DuPont was awarded $919.9 million after a seven-week trial that took five years.” Remarking on the case, Songer said, “It all related to Kevlar. KOLON is a foreign company, there was document destruction and someone took the Fifth—in a civil case. There were so many moving parts, including a companion antitrust case. It was one of the biggest trade secret cases ever to go to trial and hotly contested. We made a lot of law that scholars had talked about but no one had taken to a judge.”
