Washington – December 19, 2024: Global Competition Review recognized Crowell & Moring’s Antitrust & Competition Group in its 2025 “GCR 100” – a comprehensive list of the world’s leading competition practices. This year marks the 25th edition of the rankings and the 18th consecutive year that Crowell’s Antitrust & Competition Group has been recognized.
In Washington, GCR spotlighted high-profile client work across a range of industries, including helping Novant Health argue a successful defense after the FTC challenged its purchase of two North Carolina hospitals and guiding DirecTV in its antitrust lawsuit against Nexstar. Crowell’s Washington D.C. team, led by group co-chair Shawn Johnson, also represents Humana as it responds to the FTC’s Section 6(b) study of pharmaceutical benefit managers and a lawsuit brought by the state of Ohio alleging a conspiracy to raise administrative fees with group purchasing organizations. The team was also highlighted for defending Huntington Ingalls Industries and Geisinger Health in separate no-poach class actions. Over the past year, the team brought on four new counsel, including Mike DeRita from U.S. Department of Justice and Dan Leff from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Additionally, the group gained new partner Kenneth Dintzer, former deputy branch director in the National Courts Section of DOJ's Civil Division, after GCR research was complete.
In California, GCR reported that Crowell’s competition practice, led by group co-chair Jason Murray, defends major companies in the health care industry, including Cardinal Health in government-led investigations and in the Generic Pharmaceuticals Pricing antitrust litigation, as well as Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in defending against a class action lawsuit. Crowell also helped surfing machine manufacturer WhiteWater Industries beat allegations at trial that it illegally monopolized the market. Additionally, the firm successfully defended Marriott International in a conspiracy claim brought by TravelPass. Five days into trial, the claimant withdrew its claims and issued a rare formal public apology. The team brought on partner Eric Enson in February 2024.
In New York, GCR ranked Crowell’s practice Highly Recommended, noting Juan Arteaga’s experiences as the former Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the DOJ Antitrust Division. The publication highlighted the firm’s work for CSX in two multidistrict litigations. GCR also noted the firm’s work advising AT&T on its $43 billion sale of WarnerMedia to Discovery.
In Belgium, anchored by leading partners Thomas De Meese and Karel Bourgeois, the practice helped Telenet secure BCA approval in November 2023 for the transfer of its Zoomit business to Doccle, a joint venture between Telenet and Isabel Group. The team also represented Belgian company Verduyn in the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets’ carrot cartel investigation.
