Brussels – March 1, 2018: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Kristof Roox, a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and co-managing partner of its Brussels office, has been named to the National Law Journal’s 2018 list of Intellectual Property Trailblazers. The list features 25 lawyers who “continue to make their mark in various aspects of legal work in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret law.”
Roox focuses on IP litigation across technological and commercial fields, with a particular emphasis on complex patent litigation in the pharmaceutical and biotech sector. In Roox’s Trailblazer profile, the National Law Journal notes that among his cases, Roox has convinced Belgian courts to allow technical discussions in summary proceedings and move away from a strict presumption of validity of a patent. The publication also highlights his victory on behalf of Telenet, where he persuaded the Belgium Supreme Court that direct injection of television programs into a cable network represents a single communication to the public rather than two – a judgment in a case that Roox describes as “one of the most important ongoing copyright law litigations in Belgium.” He also successfully represented Sandoz in litigation involving the invalidity of a patent covering the extended release of quetiapine, Mylan in the European-wide glatiramer acetate and tadalafil litigation, Novartin in parallel import matters, and Syral in opposition proceedings against a counterfeit seizure requested by Roquette Frères. He is also widely recognized for his thought leadership in the regulatory aspects of life sciences.
Looking ahead, Roox expects to see litigation move from big pharma suing generics on small molecules to big pharma versus big pharma on biosimilars.
