Edward Taelman is an expert in intellectual property and technology law.

Edward boasts extensive experience in conducting IP litigation before Belgian, Benelux, and European courts. He regularly assists clients in trademark enforcement cases, as well as opposition and cancellation actions before the Benelux IP Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Edward is a seasoned litigator whose trademark experience includes several landmark cases that have shaped the legal landscape concerning the liability of online intermediaries for third-party content in the EU. Edward also represents clients in complex patent disputes, including entitlement actions. He assists clients from the pretrial strategy to the enforcement stage, where his deep knowledge of procedural law allows him to win cases that are generally considered unwinnable. Edward's ability to develop creative procedural strategies and achieve favourable outcomes for his clients is a testament to his expertise and dedication. Edward also assists clients in non-contentious matters in relation to IP, by negotiating and drafting licensing agreements, franchise agreements, R&D and collaboration agreements.

Edward also has extensive experience in advising clients on cybersecurity and privacy regulation. Collaborating closely with the firm's cyber specialists, he leverages his litigation skills and deep understanding of cybersecurity law to guide clients through compliance with the NIS2 Directive and the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), incident response preparation, internal investigations, and notifications to relevant authorities. Edward's comprehensive approach ensures that companies are well-prepared to handle cybersecurity incidents. He also assists companies on all aspects of privacy law, from compliance projects to investigations by the Data Protection Authority and litigation before the Belgian courts.

Edward's expertise extends to advising companies on the myriad regulations governing the digital economy. He provides guidance on ensuring e-commerce activities align with EU regulations, including the Digital Services Act, the Platform-to-Business Regulation, the AI Act, and the General Product Safety Regulation. His holistic understanding of these regulations helps clients navigate the complexities of the digital marketplace.

Edward is a member of INTA (the Internet Committee), AIPPI, EPLAW, BMM and sits on the editorial board of IE-forum.be, a specialised website that curates recent European and Belgian jurisprudence on IP rights.
