New York – May 30, 2025: James Carolan has joined Crowell & Moring’s Corporate Group as senior counsel, bringing over 35 years of experience advising major corporations, investors, funds, universities, and tax-exempt organizations on their real estate needs.

Carolan has handled acquisitions and sales of single assets and portfolios, ground leases, space leases for office, retail, warehouse and other uses, asset-based and mezzanine financings, development and investment joint ventures, construction and design arrangements, and complex easements for conservation, utilities, construction, and access.

At Crowell, Carolan’s practice will focus heavily on the real estate aspects of corporate and merger & acquisition transactions. He further enhances the firm’s full service offering on real estate projects, including acquisition, development, financing, leasing, disposition, and regulation.

“Jim’s addition to our robust Corporate Group further deepens our bench and supports the continued expansion of our corporate, M&A, and transactional practice, and ensures we continue to be able to meet the growing needs of our clients,” said John Koenigsknecht, chair of Crowell’s Corporate Group. “In addition, Jim has unique experience and a deep understanding of the real estate components in the healthcare and nonprofit space, where ever-changing regulations have led to increasingly complex transactions.”

In addition to his extensive commercial experience, Carolan has handled over $1 billion in luxury residential transactions in and outside the United States. He frequently advises high net worth individuals with substantial real estate holdings on intergenerational real estate ownership challenges, threats of partition, and uncooperative partners.

“Crowell & Moring is a forward-looking firm that prioritizes collaboration, which is imperative as I continue to help guide clients through their complex real estate transactions,” Carolan said. “There is increased demand from my clients and others for the full-service offering that the firm provides and I am thrilled to grow my practice here.”

Carolan received his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. He also has a master’s degree from Stanford University. He was also previously the associate general counsel for Yale University.
