Firm News | 2 min read | 05.30.24

Washington – May 30, 2024: The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs awarded Crowell & Moring partner and deputy general counsel George D. Ruttinger with the 2024 Rod Boggs Award. The award is given to a member of the legal profession who has made a sustained commitment to the Washington Lawyers’ Committee, its clients, and its values. Ruttinger was honored for his distinguished career as a litigator with an exceptional commitment to civil rights and pro bono service.

Ruttinger’s relationship with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee began nearly four decades ago, when he successfully represented plaintiffs in combatting lending discrimination and racial redlining. During the 1990s, he played a vital role in a landmark Committee case challenging a large car rental franchise’s refusal to rent cars to Black customers.

In 1996, Ruttinger was named general counsel for the Fair Housing Council, now the Equal Rights Center. That same year, Ruttinger joined the board of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee and was elected co-chair in 2009. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Wiley A. Branton Award for his outstanding commitment to civil rights and his dedicated leadership as a board co-chair at the Committee.

The 2024 Rod Boggs Award award was presented to Ruttinger at the Wiley A. Branton Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, May 29. To read more about the Rod Boggs Award, click here.
