Washington, D.C. – January 4, 2008: For the second consecutive year, Arthur N. Lerner, a partner in Crowell & Moring LLP's Health Care Group, has been recognized as one of 12 "Outstanding Healthcare Antitrust Lawyers" in the December 2007 issue of Nightingale's Healthcare News. The honor recognizes exceptional lawyers practicing in healthcare antitrust nationwide. In 2005, Lerner was also named to Nightingale's "Outstanding Hospital Lawyers" annual list. Nightingale’s Healthcare News is a monthly newsletter for professionals serving the healthcare industry, healthcare executives, and others.
The report states that Lerner has been lead antitrust counsel to Sierra Health Services in connection with its $2.6 billion sale to UnitedHealth Group. It also references his work as counsel for Bon Secours Cottage Health Services in defense of a class action lawsuit alleging a conspiracy to depress nurse wages, and highlights his representation of clients in other health care antitrust matters.
Lerner's practice focuses on antitrust, transactions, and fraud and abuse issues for managed care organizations, health care providers, and other health care entities. He is the former chair (2004-2007) of the antitrust practice group of the American Health Lawyers Association and former chair of the American Bar Association Antitrust Section’s Federal Civil Enforcement (formerly FTC) Committee (2004-2007). He directed the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) health care antitrust program from 1982 to 1985 and before that, while at the Commission, he served as attorney advisor to the Chairman of the FTC, as assistant to the director of the Bureau of Competition, as deputy assistant director (Health Care) and as an FTC trial attorney in health care antitrust.
