New York Law Journal Names Paul Mourning a New York Trailblazer

Firm News | 2 min read | 05.21.19

New York – May 21, 2019: The New York Law Journal has named Crowell & Moring partner Paul Mourning to its inaugural list of New York Trailblazers. The list features “professionals who have made significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancement of their practice.”

Last fall, after leading one of the region’s top health care and nonprofit practices, Mourning was part of a 9-lawyer health care group that moved to Crowell & Moring, expanding the firm’s ability to better serve health care clients and nonprofit organizations. The team not only brings an in-depth knowledge of the New York health care market, but also introduces a post-acute care focus that the firm did not offer before. With the addition of the New York team, the firm’s national health care practice has grown by 20 percent.

The New York Law Journal notes that as a young lawyer in the 1980s, Mourning represented The Salvation Army and the organization’s exit from the hospital industry. “At the same time, Mourning worked the transactional and governance side for a partner who had developed a post-acute litigation practice.” Together, the team developed a practice that served all of the state’s not-for-profit skilled nursing facilities as well as their trade association.

“Where it really got fun was when these entities merged and would start to assimilate through purchase and sale transactions,” Mourning told the publication. He now advises clients on all aspects of mergers, sales, and affiliations, including the approval process required in the sale of nonprofit health care facilities. Another focus of Mourning’s practice is advising nonprofit organizations on governance matters that are unique to tax-exempt entities under federal and state law. In the future, he told the publication he expects that state operators in the post-acute market will continue to consolidate, acquire other operators and affiliate with like-providers to create economies of scale.

“I am honored to be recognized as a New York Trailblazer,” said Mourning. “I am excited to be part of expanding the services Crowell & Moring’s Health Care Group can offer to existing and prospective clients.“
