Washington – September 25, 2020: Crowell & Moring counsel Monty Cooper has been named chair of the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources’ (ABA-SEER) Equity and Inclusion Taskforce.
The mission of the new taskforce is to enhance and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within ABA-SEER and the environmental bar. To carry out this mission, the taskforce intends to examine the makeup of the section’s committee leaders, programming, speakers, and publication authors. Further, the taskforce will work to create initiatives that will encourage more law students to consider careers in environmental law and encourage the retention and promotion of diverse attorneys within the profession including at law firms, in academia and government, and at non-profits.
“I am honored to be named as chair of this taskforce,” said Cooper. “We have an opportunity as part of ABA-SEER to make an impact within the environmental bar, and I look forward to attacking our goals with vigor and creating an inclusive space for attorneys of all walks of life.”
Cooper is both a counselor and trial lawyer, whose practice focuses on product liability, environmental, and complex civil litigation. He has litigated tort and contract cases across the country, advising clients in high-exposure litigation in numerous venues. He assists clients in both navigating the courts and finding solutions. His ability to resolve matters is bolstered by his ability to try cases when necessary: He has over a decade’s worth of experience in all phases of litigation, from discovery to motion practice to trial, including first-chair jury and bench trial experience. In addition, Cooper provides strategic counseling and legal advice on environmental issues for financial institutions regarding environmental remediation and property-transfer laws. He also provides counsel on regulatory and legislative matters affecting the mining and natural resources industries.
The ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources serves as a “forum for lawyers working in areas related to the environment, natural resources, and energy. The Section is committed to providing members with opportunities to enhance professional skills, stay on top of developments and to participate in dialogue in these substantive areas. It represents more than 7,500 members with a wide range of professional interests.”
The taskforce is made up of 10 members, including representatives from private companies, law firms, non-profits, and in-house counsel.
