Crowell & Moring’s Government Contracts Group Hosts Homeland Security Breakfast Series

Washington, D.C. – September 18, 2007: Crowell & Moring LLP hosted a homeland security breakfast series today titled, “What's Next? The Future of Homeland Security Technology,” in Washington, D.C. David Z. Bodenheimer, a Crowell & Moring Government Contracts partner and head of the firm’s Homeland Security practice, opened the breakfast panel by underscoring that technology is the key to a successful defense of homeland security and that SAFETY Act liability protections are critical to spurring development of such anti-terrorism technologies. Other panel members included:

  • Scott L. Greiper - Managing Director at Legend Merchant Group (LMG) and Head of LMG's Convergent Security Group (CSG). The CSG is an integrated investment banking practice focused on providing value-added capital and business advisory services to public and private companies in the surging homeland security and security technology arenas.
  • Robert Hooks - Director of Transition, in the Science and Technology Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In this role, Hooks is responsible for delivering near-term advanced technologies to the operational components of DHS to address their priority mission capability gap areas. He communicates regularly with the component agencies of DHS to understand capability gaps and propose appropriate technology solutions when applicable. In addition, Hooks oversees DHS’ SAFETY Act liability protection program.
  • Thomas McMillen – Chief Executive Officer of the Homeland Security Capital Corporation, a homeland security consolidator. McMillen has had a highly diversified and successful career in the fields of sports, business, and politics. He served three consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from the Fourth Congressional District of Maryland from 1987 to 1993, and was named by President Clinton to co-chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 1993. He served in that capacity through December 1997.
  • Michael R. Steed - Founder and Managing Partner of Paladin Capital Group located in Washington, D.C. Paladin has multiple private equity funds that primarily invest in expansion capital and buy outs in small to medium size worker friendly companies. His most recent fund is focused on Homeland Security companies that have products, services and technologies that will help prevent, defend and cope with the immediate aftermath and recovery from terrorist attacks, national disasters and other inappropriate and criminal activity.
