Crowell & Moring's Glen McGorty Appointed to Oversee New York Carpenters Union and Its Benefit Funds

Washington, D.C. – January 1, 2015: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Glen G. McGorty, a New York-based partner in the firm's White Collar & Regulatory Enforcement Group, has been appointed as Independent Monitor to oversee the operations of the New York City District Council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, and its Benefit Funds.

On January 1, 2015, McGorty began his term as Independent Monitor, appointed by the Honorable Richard M. Berman, United States District Court Judge, Southern District of New York. McGorty's appointment is the result of an agreement between the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, the District Council and the Benefit Funds, approved by the Court in its Order dated November 18, 2014. The agreement stems from the government's long-term monitoring of the District Council, as prompted by the United States' 1990 lawsuit against the union under the Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

The Union has made significant progress in advancing anti-corruption objectives. Despite these strides, the government and the District Council agree that the appointment of McGorty as Independent Monitor was advisable to afford the District Council the opportunity to demonstrate that it can sustain the reform measures that have been implemented and operate free from the influence of racketeering and corruption.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, McGorty served almost fifteen years as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in Washington, D.C. During his career with the government, McGorty prosecuted and supervised a wide range of significant high-profile cases, handling white collar matters such as securities fraud, public corruption, wire and mail fraud, money laundering, tax violations, insider trading, accounting fraud and options backdating cases, and other serious criminal cases, such as RICO enterprises, international narcotics trafficking, and violent crimes, including kidnapping and murder.

At Crowell & Moring, McGorty represents corporate entities and individuals in federal and state criminal and regulatory matters, and in investigations conducted by grand juries, congressional committees, independent and special counsel, and international, federal and state law enforcement and regulatory agencies. He has also led internal investigations for clients ranging from international financial institutions to major defense contractors.
