Washington, D.C. – March 9, 2016: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that George Ruttinger, a Washington, D.C.-based partner and co-chair of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Group, has been named to the National Law Journal's inaugural “ADR Champions” list. The list features 48 attorneys who continue to make their mark in various aspects of alternative dispute resolution. According to the publication, the honorees demonstrate "a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way.”
The National Law Journal recognized Ruttinger’s representation of domestic and foreign clients in international arbitrations before tribunals of the International Chamber of Commerce, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, Netherlands Arbitration Institute, Permanent Court of Arbitration, and the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The publication noted that during a 12-month period, Ruttinger handled three trials of international investment arbitrations under ICSID and UNCITRAL rules.
The National Law Journal also highlighted Ruttinger’s representation of a Canadian mining company in arbitration against the Government of Mongolia claiming unlawful expropriation of a valuable uranium mine. As a result, on March 2, 2015, a distinguished Tribunal of arbitrators issued an Award finding that Mongolia had unlawfully expropriated the mine in violation of the Energy Charter Treaty and Mongolian Foreign Investment Law. The Tribunal awarded Ruttinger’s client damages and costs totaling over $100 million. Ruttinger is now representing the client in an action to confirm the Award in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Looking ahead, Ruttinger noted that “international arbitration and mediation will likely take on increasing prominence in the future as methods for efficiently resolving disputes.”
