Crowell & Moring's Antitrust & International Trade Practices Continue to Grow

Lipstein, Jaffe and Lawson Join the Firm's D.C. Office

Washington, D.C. – March 12, 2003: Crowell & Moring ("C&M") announced today that Robert Lipstein and Matthew Jaffe, formerly of Lipstein, Jaffe and Lawson, will be joining the firm in its D.C. office, effective March 17. In joining C&M, they bring with them over a half-century of large law firm and U.S. government experience on complex antitrust, international trade, corporate and intellectual property matters. Moreover, they have significant experience in representing leading global companies in regulatory proceedings before the International Trade Commission, the Department of Commerce, the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, and the Federal Trade Commission, and in litigating trade, antitrust and trademark and copyright issues.

Firm Chairman John Macleod notes that, "Rob and Matt have had a successful antitrust and international trade boutique for the past eight years. These are areas of strength and growth at our firm." ROBERT A. LIPSTEIN, joining as a partner, will be an important addition to the firm's world-class antitrust practice. Beginning his Washington legal career with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, Lipstein worked as an antitrust attorney under former FTC Chairman Miles Kirkpatrick. In 1984, he moved to the Washington office of Coudert Brothers, where for 10 years he continued to advise leading multinational corporations on mergers and acquisitions, pricing and distribution practices, and general antitrust compliance. Over the past eight years he has carried on his work as a specialist in all aspects of the merger review process, from the initial Hart-Scott-Rodino notification, to the "quick look," the full Second Request, through to negotiating consent decrees with the antitrust agencies. Since the mid - 1980's, he has also regularly represented companies in the registration and defense of trademarks and copyrights, with recent enforcement action focused on infringements of intellectual property rights by unauthorized retailers on the Internet. MATTHEW P. JAFFE, joining as a partner, is an international trade specialist who will be working with C&M's international trade group. Jaffe first worked in the U.S. Senate as staff counsel to a select ABSCAM committee, and then became special counsel to the Senate Rules Committee regarding a dispute before the International Labour Organization. Leaving his Senate staff positions, he went onto focus his career on international trade, first as an attorney with the U.S. International Trade Commission, then as an attorney with the Import Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. In 1990, he ventured into private practice by joining the Washington, D.C. office of Coudert Brothers. Jaffe's legal practice, focused primarily in the international trade area, has led him to participating in a number of international trade cases involving antidumping and countervailing duties and section 301, works on issues involving U.S. customs law and, with export regulations.
