Washington, D.C. – June 19, 2013: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that the firm was honored as one of two "Pro Bono Law Firms of the Year" by the District of Columbia Bar Association. The firm was recognized during the organization's 2013 awards dinner and annual meeting on June 18 at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel.
Crowell & Moring was honored for building one of the nation's most sophisticated pro bono programs. The D.C. Bar Association noted that, "the firm serves as a model for other large firms in its commitment to and administration of pro bono service, and is the "go-to" law firm for many legal services organizations in the District of Columbia." In 2012, Crowell & Moring accepted 21 pro bono cases from the Children's Law Center, providing over 700 hours of pro bono service. In addition, the firm took more cases from the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia than any other firm, representing more than 10 percent of Legal Aid referrals citywide.
In addition, Crowell & Moring is the driving force behind the creation of AT-HOME -- The Alliance to Help Owners Maintain Equity, a coalition launched by the firm and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP's) Legal Counsel for the Elderly to reform the tax sale foreclosure system in the District. The project arose out of Crowell & Moring's staffing of the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program's Tax Sale Resource Center, and realizing the injustices many homeowners with tax deficiencies face as a result of a broken system.
The D.C. Bar Association awards dinner and annual meeting also featured the presentation of the 2013 "Beatrice Rosenberg Award for Excellence in Government Service" to Francine J. Kerner, chief counsel for the Transportation Security Administration at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the "William J. Brennan Jr. Award" to Walter A. Smith Jr. of the D.C. Appleseed Center.
