Washington - February 20, 2018: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that the firm is an inaugural member of client R3’s Legal Center of Excellence (LCoE), which is devoted to advancing legal thought leadership and sharing best practices regarding blockchain technology and R3’s blockchain platform Corda.

R3 announced the launch of this legal center earlier today. Crowell & Moring is among 10 international law firms that will collaborate regarding Corda, R3’s open-source platform designed to record, manage, and automate legal agreements between businesses.

An enterprise software firm, R3 is collaborating with a network of more than 200 banks, financial institutions, regulators, trade associations, professional services firms, and technology companies to develop Corda.

LCoE members will have access to R3’s research on blockchain and monthly demonstrations that will give them insight into “real world blockchain applications,” according to R3’s announcement. Richard Gendal Brown, R3’s chief technology officer, said the LCoE “will allow R3 to directly engage with the lawyers that will be advising on and helping draft the smart contracts used by the network of Corda users across the globe.”

“We are excited to partner with R3 to share best practices on blockchain technology and Corda,” said Philip T. Inglima, Crowell & Moring chair, “so that we are able to provide the best insight on advising clients in this revolutionary space.”

In May 2017, Crowell & Moring advised R3 in securing $107 million in the largest investment in DLT to date. Investors in this consortium included more than 40 global financial institutions and other companies from across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas.
