Crowell & Moring Hits Upper Reaches Of Legal Times 150 Listings

Washington, D.C. – Oct. 26, 2004: Crowell & Moring landed in the upper ranks of two listings of the Legal Times 150, an annual survey conducted by the D.C.-based newspaper. C&M claimed the number 12 spot in the "The D.C. Metro Area's Largest Law Offices" listing, while "The D.C. Metro Area's Largest Home-Grown Firms" placed the firm in the top 10 with a number 9 ranking. The number of lawyers at the firm increased to 236, up from 233 last year. Seventeen new associates were expected to be added this year. C&M Chairman John Macleod is satisfied with the rankings.

"With the growth that's going on in law firms these days, it's an accomplishment to be the 12th largest firm in Washington, D.C. - particularly since we are quite a bit younger than the top 10 firms. Our growth continues to be steady, deliberate, and geared to our clients' needs," Mr. Macleod said.

In addition to growth in the ranks of lawyers, the firm has seen a boost in revenue. Billable hours increased between 3 and 4 percent, while the enhanced revenue may be due to an increase in billing rates.

The surveys gather information on lawyer head counts at firms in the D.C. metropolitan area. Approximately 250 offices in the District of Columbia; Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland; and Arlington and Fairfax counties and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia were surveyed for this report. The rankings reflect the total number of lawyers at the offices as of April 1, 2004. The surveys have been conducted since 1978.
