Leading Asian American scholars and community advocates discuss current climate
Washington – May 11, 2021: Crowell & Moring and IHS Markit hosted a panel in honor of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. The virtual event gathered leading Asian American scholars and community advocates, as well as over 200 attendees both internal and external to the hosting organizations, to discuss the complex and untaught history of anti-Asian racism, misogyny, fetishism, dehumanization, scapegoating, and xenophobia.
The panel, moderated by Jenny Chung Savidge, SVP, Chief Compliance, Privacy and Risk Officer for IHS Markit, included:
- Jennifer Ho, Director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts and Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder;
- Catherine Ceniza Choy, Professor of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley; and
- Stephanie Cho, Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Atlanta.
Panelists also explored the historical and current climate of hate and violence that led up to the Atlanta spa murders, and what’s happening on the ground in Atlanta in the wake of these tragic events. Additional topics included the pandemic’s impact on Asian American health care workers, small businesses, and the elderly; issues of race and intersectionality, particularly as they relate to low-wage immigrant workers in vulnerable jobs; the erasure of Asian American history in U.S. curriculum; and the next steps that must be taken for today’s Asian American civil rights movement for equality, visibility, and agency.
