Crowell & Moring partner Preetha Chakrabarti has been appointed to the National Center for Youth Law’s board of directors.
For more than five decades, the National Center for Youth Law has worked to center the voices and experiences of children and youth denied access to educational, health, and social well-being opportunities, particularly Black youth and youth of color, LGBTQ+ youth, youth who have disabilities, immigrant youth, and youth in child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
“It is an honor to serve on the board of directors of NCYL. I look forward to working with this organization to drive policy change in the courts and community to better the well-being of every child,” Chakrabarti said.
Chakrabarti is a member of the firm’s Technology & Intellectual Property Department, a co-leader of the firm’s ESG Advisory Group, and a co-leader of the firm’s Metaverse working group. Her practice cuts across all areas of intellectual property, consisting of litigation, counseling, licensing, and transactional due diligence as well as trademark prosecution. In particular, she advises clients in the technology, retail, and fashion industries on how best to manage risks when using and developing intellectual property.
Chakrabarti has an active pro bono practice, including cases involving appellate, immigration, family, and employment law as well as IP counseling for nonprofit entities. She successfully represented Sandra Avery, a woman sentenced to life in prison for a nonviolent, low-level drug crime who sought commutation of her sentence from President Barack Obama, reducing her life sentence to time served. In 2023, Chakrabarti was appointed to The City of New York Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, which works to recruit and encourage diverse and highly qualified people to serve as a judge of the Criminal, Family, or on an interim basis, the Civil Court.
