Washington, D.C. March 29,2022—Crowell & Moring has elevated Carmen Barboza, a respected human resources leader, to the role of Chief Human Resources Officer effective immediately.
In her new role, Barboza will lead the firm’s human resources team across its 12 offices and be responsible for a wide range of functions, including firmwide benefits, handling sensitive lawyer and staff employee relations issues, staff recruiting, and training and development.
During her 5-year tenure at the firm, Barboza has:
- Implemented a new support services model for the firm, increasing ratios and changing our approach to offer more dedicated support to our lawyers
- Designed and executed the HR Business Partner model to embed HR into our business processes and offer strategic support to our practices and departments
- Revamped and refreshed our benefits offerings in the wake of the pandemic to better align with our community’s needs
“Carmen has proved to be a trusted advisor and innovative leader,” said Ellen Dwyer, chair of the firm’s executive committee. “She is a consummate collaborator and team player.”
Barboza joined the firm in 2019 from Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C. and quickly rose through the ranks to become Director of Human Resources before being promoted to Chief Human Resources Officer.
“I look forward to working with the firm’s leaders to continue to strengthen Crowell’s culture as a place that values hard work and the highest level of client service but also a place that values the importance of self-care,” Barboza said. “Being a leader is not about doing everything perfectly. But rather, it is about showing vulnerability and recognizing that there is only so much we can do in a day.”
A Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, Barboza earned her undergraduate degree from George Washington University and serves on the Forbes Human Resources Council.
