Expands the Firm’s Consumer Product Safety and Compliance Capabilities on the West Coast

San Francisco – July 17, 2025: Crowell & Moring has added two experienced in-house counsel from Amazon to its Litigation Group, expanding the firm’s abilities to serve clients facing complex consumer product liability issues. Clay Marquez, former Senior Corporate Counsel for WW Stores at Amazon, and Meghan McMeel, former Senior Corporate Counsel for Devices at Amazon, join the firm as partners in San Francisco.

The duo brings unique in-house and private practice experience to Crowell, where they will work with clients to develop innovative strategies to navigate today’s complex legal and regulatory landscape, both domestically and abroad, so clients can mitigate risk and protect and grow their businesses. McMeel’s understanding of the regulatory and technical landscape involved in the design, production, and marketing of devices and technology products and Marquez’s experience counseling companies on product safety and compliance in the retail marketplace will provide clients with comprehensive counseling on the full lifecycle of their products.

“The addition of Meghan and Clay immediately expands the capabilities of our market leading consumer products practice,” said Cheryl Falvey, a partner in Crowell & Moring’s Litigation and  Privacy & Cybersecurity groups and a former general counsel of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “Their firsthand experience supporting the world’s largest retailer in different but complementary ways is a significant market differentiator and will allow us to better serve clients on the West Coast who are struggling to navigate shifting demands from state and federal regulators.”

During her tenure at Amazon, McMeel supported the Devices organization. In that role, she advised on safety and compliance matters across eight global lines of business, including Lab126, Ring, Blink, and eero device lines. McMeel advised on reporting obligations and regulatory inquiries related to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (and international safety regulators), U.S. Food and Drug Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and State Attorneys General. She also led a team managing medical device regulations under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act, covering regulatory supplier audits, end-user communications, and agency communications. Prior to joining Amazon, McMeel spent a decade in private practice representing corporations in product liability and commercial lawsuits. She served as national counsel for various Fortune 500 companies, implementing strategic long-term initiatives, as well as supporting day-to-day litigation needs.

At Amazon, Marquez led the Regulatory Intelligence Safety & Compliance legal team for North America. He managed Amazon’s regulatory strategy for consumer product safety, interacting with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other federal and international regulators. Prior to Amazon, Marquez was the Vice President and Senior Counsel of Product & Vendor Compliance at Restoration Hardware (RH). In that role, he developed RH’s plan for international expansion of its product safety program. Prior to going in-house, Marquez spent more than a decade in private practice representing Fortune 500 companies in various class action and commercial litigation settings, including securities enforcement, advertising and consumer class actions, and products liability.

“We have seen firsthand why companies turn to Crowell for guidance on their most sensitive product safety issues. Crowell is committed to exceptional client service and has a proven track record of successfully litigating federal and state product liability, consumer protection, and product safety matters,” said Marquez.

“We are excited to expand Crowell’s West Coast product safety practice to offer clients a comprehensive one-stop solution for regulatory support, industry knowledge, and litigation capabilities,” said McMeel. “We look forward to working with clients to maximize the value of their products and services, at every step of the product lifecycle and distribution chain, and to minimize unpleasant surprises.”

Marquez earned his law degree from Fordham University School of Law and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California. He also holds a master’s in education from the University of New Mexico. In addition to his contributions to the legal profession, he holds a position as an advisor and board member on the Economic Leadership Council with the University of Southern California. McMeel earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law and her bachelor’s degree from DePaul University. McMeel previously taught pretrial civil litigation at The University of California College of the Law and recently served as a commissioner on the California State Bar’s Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission.
