Crowell & Moring Achieves Mansfield Certification Plus for 2023

Certification Plus confirms both consideration and achievement of established representation goals

Washington – October 10, 2023: Crowell & Moring has achieved Mansfield Certification Plus status for 2023 – our second consecutive year, along with Mansfield Certification for the fifth consecutive year. The Mansfield Rule measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, lawyers of color, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and/or lawyers with disabilities — at least 30 percent of the candidate pool — for significant leadership and governance roles and client pitch teams, as well as promotions to equity partner and senior lateral hiring decisions.

Achieving the Certification Plus recognition signifies that the firm has “not only considered, but achieved 30 percent representation of underrepresented lawyers in many of the Mansfield Rule’s categories.” This year, over 175 large firms achieved Certification, 91 of which also achieved Certification Plus. The firm has already committed to continue participating in the Mansfield Certification process for 2023-2024.

“Achieving Mansfield Certification Plus is an honor as we continue to take strides towards creating a more inclusive legal profession,” said Philip T. Inglima, chair of Crowell & Moring. “We firmly believe that diverse perspectives and experiences enrich our firm, and we will remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure equity and transparency in our approach to talent development.”

The Mansfield Rule is named after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, and it is inspired by the “Rooney Rule,” a mandate that requires every NFL team to interview at least one minority candidate for head coach vacancies. Beyond participating in Mansfield, the firm established the Crowell Rule, which surpasses Mansfield recruiting standards, in order to further diversify our recruiting pipeline and advance our goal of creating a meaningfully diverse and inclusive community.
