Crowell & Moring Taps Tiana Russell as Public Service Counsel

Washington – March 6, 2019: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of Tiana Russell as Public Service Counsel. A former counsel in the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department, Russell will promote the firm’s award-winning pro bono program.

“As the firm celebrates its 40th anniversary, we are making a renewed commitment to providing pro bono legal services to the communities in which our offices are located,” said Susie Hoffman, Crowell & Moring public service partner. “We are proud to welcome Tiana as the second public service counsel in the firm’s history to help us meet these increased demands.”

The addition of a second public service counsel comes 30 years after the firm’s tenth anniversary in 1989, when the firm established the first pro bono counsel position in recognition of the substantial unmet legal needs of low-income individuals in the District of Columbia. Hoffman first filled that position, and in late 1999, was the first full-time pro bono professional in Washington, D.C. to be promoted to partner. Over the past 30 years, the firm has nearly tripled in size and has added three additional U.S. offices and two international offices.

Russell has a long history of dedication to pro bono work and public service. In her position at the Justice Department, she took on the informal role of pro bono coordinator of her section, hosting brown bag trainings and circulating pro bono opportunities. Prior to her government service, Russell was an associate at Arnold & Porter LLP where she was an integral member of that firm’s Immigration Committee, overseeing and coordinating the firm’s active pro bono immigration practice. At A&P, Russell also maintained an active pro bono docket that included housing, international human rights and criminal law matters, in addition to immigration cases.  She is a member of the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of the D.C. Bar Foundation.

“I am thrilled to join Crowell & Moring at such an exciting time for the firm,” Russell said. “My work experience in immigration, housing, and criminal law makes me well suited to provide a useful perspective as public service counsel given the firm’s expanding pro bono commitments.”
