Practice co-chair’s experience in investment arbitrations is noted
Washington – June 14, 2018: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Ian A. Laird, co-chair of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Group, has been named to the National Law Journal's “ADR Champions” list. The list features 46 lawyers who continue to make their mark in various aspects of alternative dispute resolution and according to NLJ, demonstrates "a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way.”
With more than 20 years of government and private-practice experience, Laird represents a range of clients in international arbitration proceedings involving disputes between corporations and foreign sovereign governments. A Washington-based partner, Laird has counseled parties in investment arbitrations under the provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), The Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), the Energy Charter Treaty, and other international investment agreements, typically applying the arbitration rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) or the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). His cases have involved Egypt, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Turkey.
In an interview with NLJ, Laird noted his work on the earliest NAFTA investor-state arbitrations: “There was almost no one working in that field at the time. The NAFTA cases were contentious and caused a lot of debate about international trade in general. It was a pretty heavy time to be a young associate involved in this.”
The publication also highlighted Laird’s work to educate others in the field, including founding the website InvestmentClaims.com(published by Oxford University Press), a leading resource in the field of investment arbitration.
