Crowell & Moring Brussels Office Supports Gear Up Medical in COVID-19 Efforts

Firm News | 1 min read | 04.10.20

Brussels – April 10, 2020: Crowell & Moring’s Brussels office is providing pro bono counsel to Gear Up Medical VZW, an initiative formed by two brothers who have developed an alternative, cost-efficient ventilator to help alleviate the medical supply shortage in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gear Up Medical was started by Jan Herregodts, an emergency doctor in training, and Stijn Herregodts, a robotics doctoral student, with the help of entrepreneurs, volunteers, and material donations from several corporations. The ventilators are built with widely available parts that are not typically used in the medical industry so as to not to disrupt that supply chain.

Crowell & Moring provides pro bono legal counsel on contracting in the start-up, later sales phases and compliance and risk management issues, as well as coordinating the different legal service providers that are assisting Gear Up Medical. The firm is also assisting with navigating intellectual property and regulatory issues and, in a later phase, international trade and government contracts challenges.
