Washington, D.C. – July 12, 2016: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that Andrew I. Gavil, a former office director at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a leading academic authority on antitrust law, has joined its Antitrust Group in Washington, D.C. as senior of counsel.

Gavil, a former director of the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning, is a Professor of Law at the Howard University School of Law, a position he has held since 1989. He teaches courses on antitrust law, federal regulation, civil procedure, and complex litigation. He has written, lectured, and commented extensively in the U.S. and abroad on antitrust law, jurisdiction, and procedure. His experience extends to many aspects of antitrust law, litigation, and competition policy, including the litigation of complex antitrust claims and defenses, exclusionary conduct by dominant firms, the analysis of theories of competitive harm, regulatory responses to new and disruptive firms and business models, and international and comparative aspects of competition law.

“We are excited to have Andy join our firm,” said Wm. Randolph Smith, chair of Crowell & Moring’s Antitrust Group. “His vast knowledge of complex antitrust issues, both from the academic world and from his experience at the FTC, brings an unparalleled perspective for our clients and will further enhance our regulatory and litigation capabilities.”

Additionally, Gavil has co-authored several books, including a leading antitrust casebook and Microsoft and the Globalization of Antitrust Law: Competition Policy for the Twenty-First Century. He has also been recognized by the Section of Antitrust Law of the American Bar Association for his contributions to the work of the section, and is the incoming Chair of the Editorial Board of the Antitrust Law Journal and the Chair of the Section’s International Scholar in Residence Selection Committee.

Gavil will remain a professor at Howard while working at Crowell & Moring. He earned his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review, and earned his B.A. magna cum laude from Queens College of the City University of New York.
