Washington, D.C. – November 14, 2013: Crowell & Moring LLP's Antitrust Group has been recognized as "Highly Recommended" in Global Competition Review's (GCR) 14th edition of the "GCR 100: The World's Leading Competition Practices," in the categories of "United States: Government Antitrust" and "United States: New York." GCR is the leading international journal of competition policy and regulation.
The editors of the GCR 100 survey in the "United States: Government Antitrust" category note, "As well as working on some of last year's most high-profile deals, Crowell & Moring says it is experiencing an 'explosive' growth in litigation work. The team, headed by Randolph Smith and Robert Lipstein, saw its litigators win four Twombly motions to dismiss in a row in summer 2012, and the firm continues to hire a number of litigation specialists to meet the growing demand."
Further, the report highlights that the firm, "Continue(s) to act for Amazon in antitrust litigation brought by independent booksellers at a court in New York, and are representing companies such as AT&T and Motorola in bringing LCD lawsuits that have so far generated over US$100 million in settlements. In merger work, the practice led the way for United Technologies in its multi-jurisdictional purchase of Goodrich, the largest aerospace deal in history, assisted Dupont Pioneer in obtaining South African clearance for a contested acquisition of Pannar seed company, and is representing Coventry Health in its US$5.7 billion sale to Aetna."
The second accolade, appearing in GCR's "United States: New York" section, reports, "Big-ticket merger work, criminal cartel investigations and civil antitrust litigation are the three pillars of Crowell & Moring's workload...The firm has been very successful in keeping to these aims, with a presence on several recent high-profile competition matters."
The New York edition continues, "The firm is representing AT&T over its proposed US$4 billion acquisition of Leap Wireless, (Olivier) Antoine advised Veolia in obtaining conditional clearance for the US$1.9 billion sale of its solid waste management unit to Highstar, and was counsel to DuPont in the US$4.9 billion acquisition of its automotive coatings business by Carlyle Group. On the behavioural side, Crowell is advising clients in some of the DoJ's major investigations: car parts, Libor, and municipal bonds. (Daniel) Zelenko focuses his practice on litigation, and he says the firm is busy in its defence of Amazon over alleged monopolisation of the e-books market through its agreements with the six major publishing houses. It is also defending medical products distributor Owens & Minor in two federal lawsuits challenging company's pricing model; in the first lawsuit the claims were dismissed."
