CBS "48 Hours" Features Crowell & Moring Client Crosley Green’s Fight for Freedom

Washington, D.C. – April 20, 2020: CBS News’ “48 Hours” featured Crowell & Moring pro bono client Crosley Green in an investigative journalism program on April 18. The episode, “Crosley Green’s Hard Time,” reported on Green’s decades-long fight to prove his innocence in the 1989 murder of Charles “Chip” Flynn Jr.

Green has been imprisoned for over 30 years, including 19 years on Florida’s death row, while maintaining his innocence. Crowell & Moring has represented Green pro bono since 2008.

“Crosley Green is innocent, and he was wrongfully convicted. He has fought a relentless, three-decade battle for justice, and he continues to fight for his freedom,” said Crowell & Moring partner Keith J. Harrison, lead attorney for Green.

On September 5, 1990, an all-white jury convicted Green of first-degree murder of Flynn, a 22-year-old man in Titusville, Fla., and sentenced him to death. In 2009, Crowell & Moring won Green’s release from death row. He is currently serving a life sentence.

In 2018, the firm secured a critical victory in the case when a federal court in Orlando, Fla., granted Green’s petition for habeas corpus. The court found that Green’s constitutional rights were violated when Brevard County, Fla., prosecutors withheld key exculpatory evidence of Green’s innocence in his 1990 trial for the murder of Flynn. The state of Florida is appealing the ruling, arguing that Green should not be granted a new trial. The case is currently pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

CBS Correspondent Erin Moriarty has covered Green’s case for two decades. Saturday’s program was her fourth report on Green to run in the United States and internationally. View the CBS “48 Hours” program here.

The case has also been the subject of ongoing media coverage by Florida Today, a USA Today publication. Reporter John A. Torres addresses Green’s case in the fifth season of his podcast, “Murder on the Space Coast.”

Green's counsel includes Crowell & Moring partners Keith J. Harrison, Jeane A. Thomas, Vincent J. Galluzzo, and Nichols Liu partner Robert Rhoad. For more information on the case, visit the firm’s Crosley Green information page.
