CBS “48 Hours” Episode on Crosley Green Nominated for National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence Award

Washington – November 11, 2021: The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has nominated the “CBS News 48 Hours” episode, “Crosley Green’s Hard Time,” for a 2021 “Salute to Excellence Award” in the Television – Network – Investigative category. The awards recognize “journalism and communications that best cover and communicate the Black experience or address issues affecting the worldwide Black community.” Crowell & Moring serves as pro bono counsel to Mr. Green, whose story is featured in the program.

The episode, “Crosley Green’s Hard Time,” aired April 2020 and reports on Mr. Green’s decades-long fight to prove his innocence in the 1989 murder of Charles “Chip” Flynn Jr. Mr. Green had been imprisoned for more than three decades, including 19 years on Florida’s death row, while maintaining his innocence.

On April 7, 2021, U.S. District Court Judge Roy B. Dalton  granted a motion on April 7 filed by Crowell & Moring’s pro bono team to release Mr. Green from the Calhoun Correctional Institution in Florida, citing health risks stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that Mr. Green’s conviction was overturned by the same court, a decision that the state appealed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2018. In addition, Judge Dalton found that Mr. Green has been a “model prisoner” who would pose no danger to the public, based on a declaration from the prison’s warden obtained by Crowell & Moring.

Mr. Green’s case remains on appeal as he resides at home with his family.

CBS Correspondent Erin Moriarty has covered Mr. Green’s case for two decades. The 2020 program was her fourth report on Mr. Green to run in the United States and internationally.
