Gang Chen's technical and IP experience gives him a unique inside-view of the need of corporate clients, from IP asset accumulation via application/prosecution or acquisition, to patent assertion, licensing, or litigation. He believes that patents must be viewed as a business as early as the conception stage. Gang treats every patent asset with passion and believes that is the only way to provide clients with effective counseling that makes both business and legal sense.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Gang was a senior segment manager in the Intellectual Property Business Group of Alcatel-Lucent for 6 years, responsible for patent asset mining, patent claim charting for infringement, non-infringement analysis, business and royalty package development/modeling for patent licensing, patent assertion, and patent portfolio management. Prior to that, Gang had been a principal researcher at Bell Labs of Lucent Technologies (and later, Alcatel-Lucent) since graduating with a Ph.D. from the Physics Department at the University of Michigan, leading various research and development projects in semiconductor and optical physics, consumer electronics, and telecommunication systems. Gang was a prolific researcher and engineer with over 100 publications in leading journals and conference proceedings. Some of his high-profile research articles have been published in prestigious journals such as Science. Gang is also a holder of over a dozen U.S. and international patents.
