Overview

Meredith C. Manuel is a versatile litigator who brings a distinctive combination of military leadership, judicial clerkship experience, and a broad array of industry knowledge to complex commercial disputes. She serves as a trusted day-to-day strategist for clients navigating complex disputes in the healthcare, higher education, civil rights, and employment sectors.

Meredith regularly leads day-to-day case management on active matters, driving litigation strategy, and serving as the primary point of contact for clients from case inception through dispositive motions and trial. She has extensive experience drafting and arguing dispositive motions, including motions to dismiss and summary judgment briefing, and her teams have secured multiple favorable rulings for clients across a range of substantive areas. Her litigation experience includes complex discovery management, deposition practice, and court appearances in federal court.

A significant portion of Meredith's practice is devoted to healthcare litigation and arbitration, where she represents health plans in disputes involving payor-provider relationships and commercial contracts. She is experienced in both court proceedings and arbitral forums, and regularly advises healthcare clients on litigation strategy from the earliest stages of a dispute through resolution. Her commercial litigation experience includes matters involving corporate governance, labor and employment, civil rights, and higher education.

Beyond her active litigation docket, Meredith is a central editor of the firm's State Attorneys General Blog.

A Naval Academy graduate and former Surface Warfare Officer and Navy Senate Liaison Officer, Meredith brings a mission-driven approach to client service and team collaboration. Her background informs her understanding of the federal regulatory and legislative landscape that shapes her clients' businesses. Meredith is a proud veteran and is active in the firm's veterans initiatives, including its work supporting former servicemembers.

Prior to joining Crowell, Meredith clerked for Justice William Montgomery of the Arizona Supreme Court. During law school, she served as a student attorney in the Georgetown Appellate Litigation Clinic, co-authoring criminal defense appellate briefs before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Arizona.

Through her pro bono practice, Meredith represents clients in criminal matters heading to trial, federal impact litigation, and immigration proceedings on behalf of asylum seekers.

Representative Matters

Healthcare Litigation and Arbitration

  • Represents a health plan in a California arbitration involving complex payor-provider disputes, including early dispositive motion briefing.
  • Represents a health plan in Florida arbitration proceedings against a healthcare provider, managing written discovery, opposition briefing, and preparation for corporate representative depositions.
  • Drafted discovery requests and court filings across multiple Texas state and federal court proceedings on behalf of a payor client in connection with a multi-matter docket in both state and federal court.

Higher Education and Civil Rights Litigation

  • Represents a university in defense of civil rights and defamation claims in federal court, including discovery and briefing on motion to dismiss and for summary judgment.

Commercial Litigation and Corporate Disputes

  • Executing litigation strategy on behalf of a technology company in complex commercial litigation in the District of Arizona.

Pro Bono

  • Serving as attorney in a criminal defense matter referred from the Montgomery County Public Defender's Office, preparing the case for trial.
  • Assisted a foreign national throughout asylum process and continues to provide legal assistance in connection with follow-on immigration matters including obtaining lawful permanent resident status and facilitating emergency international travel.
