Recognized by Legal 500, John Paik is an experienced intellectual property (IP) attorney with a proven track record of helping companies successfully develop, protect, and monetize global patent portfolios. He advises on IP strategy for high-growth and established companies, guiding high-stakes transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and IPO readiness, by drawing on deep technical expertise across electrical engineering, life sciences, and artificial intelligence (AI).

John has secured strategic patent protection across a wide range of technologies and industries, including computer hardware and software, medical devices, digital pathology, bioinformatics, and robotics and automation. In addition to portfolio development, John advises companies and financial institutions on transactions involving the transfer, licensing, and commercialization of IP assets.

John advises clients on both proactive and defensive patent approaches, including competitive landscape analysis, freedom-to-operate assessments, and clearance opinions. His experience also includes managing high-stakes patent litigation and pre-litigation disputes, achieving favorable judgments, successful inter partes review (IPR) outcomes before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), positive results before the European Patent Office (EPO), and advantageous settlements for clients.

John regularly presents to C-suite executives, speaks at industry conferences, and leads executive-level roundtables on IP strategy and emerging technology issues.

Representative Matters

  • In an in-house capacity for a biotech company, oversaw strategic patent filings and competitive intelligence initiatives, and secured key IP assets relating to computational biology and the application of AI and machine learning for cancer detection. Also counseled executive leadership on IP during antitrust investigations, strategic reviews, and the company’s IPO.
  • Led the expedited development of an IP portfolio for a surgical robotics startup that was ultimately acquired for $3.4 billion.
  • AutoStore System, Inc. v. Ocado Innovation, Ltd., IPR2021-00798 (PTAB). Successfully represented Ocado in defeating inter partes review (IPR) challenge to patent for automated storage and handling system. The PTAB denied institution of the petition, upholding the validity of the patent.
  • Developed patent prosecution strategy for a robotics and automation company that strengthened its position in litigation, resulting in a $250 million settlement in the company’s favor.
  • Negotiated services and licensing agreements for a motion picture production and financing company in connection with the development and launch of its online platform for movies.
  • Advised an anti-piracy software company in connection with its acquisition by an online music store and information site for $42.5 million.
