Irvine, Calif. – January 27, 2026: John Paik, an intellectual property attorney with more than two decades of experience at leading law firms and technology companies, has joined Crowell & Moring as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department in Orange County.
Representative Matters
- In an in-house capacity for a biotech company, oversaw strategic patent filings and competitive intelligence initiatives, and secured key IP assets relating to computational biology and the application of AI and machine learning for cancer detection. Also counseled executive leadership on IP during antitrust investigations, strategic reviews, and the company’s IPO.
- Led the expedited development of an IP portfolio for a surgical robotics startup that was ultimately acquired for $3.4 billion.
- AutoStore System, Inc. v. Ocado Innovation, Ltd., IPR2021-00798 (PTAB). Successfully represented Ocado in defeating inter partes review (IPR) challenge to patent for automated storage and handling system. The PTAB denied institution of the petition, upholding the validity of the patent.
- Developed patent prosecution strategy for a robotics and automation company that strengthened its position in litigation, resulting in a $250 million settlement in the company’s favor.
- Negotiated services and licensing agreements for a motion picture production and financing company in connection with the development and launch of its online platform for movies.
- Advised an anti-piracy software company in connection with its acquisition by an online music store and information site for $42.5 million.
