IAM Ranks Crowell & Moring in Patent 1000 2022

Washington – June 30, 2022: Intellectual Asset Management recognized Crowell & Moring in its IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners guide, awarding the firm a gold band ranking as one of the top four firms handling patent litigation and transactions in Belgium, and a silver ranking for the firm’s Chicago office. This marks the ninth consecutive year that the firm has been ranked in the guide in Belgium. The guide also recommended Brussels partner Kristof Roox in the gold band; partner Jan-Diederik Lindemans in the silver band; and senior counsel Jurgen Figys in the bronze band.

USPTO Grants One Millionth Design Patent; When Will You Get Yours?

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently issued the one millionth U.S. Design Patent on September 26, 2023. U.S. Design Patent 1,000,000 is directed toward the ornamental design of a dispensing comb and was issued to Agustina Huckaby, an inventor and licensed cosmetologist from Fort Worth, Texas. This significant milestone, 181 years after the first design patent was issued in 1841, comes during a time of increased interest in design patents. The USPTO reports that in 2022, more than 50,000 design patent applications were filed, and that the USPTO has seen an 20% increase in design applications over the past five years.

Unpacking the European Commission’s EU Design Reform Package

On 28 November 2022, the European Commission adopted proposals for a revision of Council Regulation (EC) No 6/2002 of 12 December 2001 on Community designs (“Community Design Regulation”) and Directive 98/71/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 October 1998 on the legal protection of designs (“Design Directive”). Together, these two legal instruments form the main pillars of legal protection of designs in the EU. By revising these laws, the Commission aims to modernize a legal framework which has remained in effect for more than 20 years and make the protection of industrial designs in the EU quicker, cheaper and more predictable.
