Secondment in Doha
Aisha Zulfiqar, a second year trainee solicitor in our London office, had the opportunity to do a short secondment in our Doha office in February 2024. Aisha collaborated on a variety of initiatives and cultivated meaningful connections with colleagues. Read her account below.
As a second-year trainee solicitor for Crowell & Moring’s London office, I had an incredible opportunity to do a one-month secondment in our Doha office.
Through this experience, I collaborated with various teams, including the International Dispute Resolution Group and the Corporate and Finance Services Group, and worked on a diverse range of tasks and projects. Moreover, working in a different cultural and legal environment broadened my perspective and strengthened my adaptability skills. It also cultivated meaningful connections with colleagues.
I found the firm’s events riveting, particularly a presentation to the U.S. Embassy, that explored pivotal legal aspects within Qatar, such as arbitration institutions, tax implications, and beneficial ownership status. I also attended a panel event about empowering women in law, which I found enriching and deeply impactful. Hosted by the Doha office, this intimate gathering provided a platform for meaningful discussions surrounding the role of women in the workforce and the unique challenges they face, particularly within the legal profession.
Outside of the office, I explored the city's rich heritage, from the serene Banana Island to the bustling Souq Waqif, Museum of Islamic Art to Old Doha. I also saw a football match at one of the FIFA World Cup stadiums that featured legendary players such as Roberto Carlos and renowned YouTubers like iShowSpeed and even Arsène Wenger, one of the greatest football managers in history.
As someone deeply connected to the Muslim faith, I enjoyed going to the mosques and praying. The call to prayer (Adhaan) resonated deeply with me, adding to the enriching experience of life in Doha. My time in the city not only enhanced my professional skills but also allowed me to immerse myself in its cultural tapestry.
These experiences, combined with the cultural immersion and warm hospitality, have left me with cherished memories of my time in Doha. Thank you to my colleagues in Doha for making me feel so welcomed and making this experience truly enjoyable.
