Crowell Café – Engaging Diversity in the Workplace

Event | 10.01.24, 6:00 PM CEST - 8:00 PM CEST

Address

Crowell & Moring Brussels
7, Rue Joseph Stevens
B-1000 Brussels
Belgium

We are pleased to invite you to our next Crowell Café, where we will delve into the critical topic of engaging ethnic, racial, religious and other minorities in the workplace.

For many years, our Crowell Cafés have served as a platform for exchanging ideas on significant social issues. This year, we turn our focus to the challenges faced by minorities in professional settings. Despite progress in diversity and inclusion, recent studies indicate persistent barriers that prevent full engagement and advancement of these groups.

We will begin with a presentation by Louis Lippens, an FWP post-doctoral fellow in labour economics at Ghent University, who will share some key insights from his extensive research on labour market discrimination.

Following this, we will host a panel discussion featuring:

  • Fatma Keskin, VP Legal, Delhaize Belgium
  • Roel Verhavert, Director Sales and Business Development, Indiandribble
  • Tamara Eelsing, Diversity Manager at STIB-MIVB

These distinguished speakers will provide valuable insights into the current state of diversity in the workplace and explore strategies to enhance engagement and inclusion. We are looking forward to a lively debate and the sharing of useful experiences and knowledge!

Has the Buss Stopped? Recoupment Today

Has the Buss Stopped? Recoupment Today: In 1997, the California Supreme Court decided Buss v. Superior Court. In Buss, the court concluded that a liability insurer that defended a mixed action could seek reimbursement from the insured for the defense costs associated with the claims that were not even potentially covered. Since then, numerous courts have held that insurers are entitled to recoup their defense costs associated with uncovered claims or causes of action. On the other hand, a significant number of courts have rejected insurers’ right to recoupment, at least in the absence of a policy provision granting the insurer that right. Some commentators have even suggested that the current judicial trend might be away from permitting insurers to recoup their defense costs. Is that correct? Has the Buss stopped? This panel of coverage experts will analyze insurers’ claimed right to recoupment today, and offer their perspectives on what the law on recoupment should perhaps be and might be in the future.
