Matt Gander is an associate in Crowell & Moring’s Washington, D.C. office and a member of the firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Enforcement and International Trade groups. 

Matt’s practice focuses primarily on investigations related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and regulatory enforcement matters. He also maintains a counseling practice related to anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance. 

Representative Matters

  • Represent team of executives of a multinational pharmaceutical company related to a joint DOJ and SEC investigation into alleged bribery of government officials.
  • Represent a former executive of a large financial institution regarding alleged violations of securities law.
  • Counsel financial institutions regarding compliance with U.S. sanctions law.
  • Advise auto manufacturing company regarding its exposure related to U.S. sanctions on Iran.
  • Investigate internal compliance regarding alleged pressure to submit financial statements that were not in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Matt maintains an active pro bono practice. In addition to leading an investigation into allegations of potential malfeasance by an executive director of a nonprofit organization in the health care sector, Matt has worked on death penalty appeals. He has also helped organizations participate in the notice and comment process by drafting comments about the legal implications of proposed contraceptive mandates issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. Finally, Matt counseled a nonprofit organization on the most effective way to use U.S. sanctions law to fight kleptocracy around the world.  

Matt studied law at Georgetown University and received an undergraduate degree in history and political science from the University of Oregon.
