Lauren Bell is a counsel in Crowell & Moring’s Washington, D.C. office, where she practices in the Advertising & Product Risk Management Group.

Prior to joining the firm, Lauren worked as a trial attorney in the Consumer Protection Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for nine years. While at the DOJ, Lauren litigated civil and criminal cases enforcing and defending the consumer protection programs of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Lauren prosecuted complex criminal health care actions and civil enforcement cases on behalf of the FDA. She has experience handling cases involving a wide array of issues, including marketing and promotional activities, adulterated food products, and fraud. During her tenure, she worked closely with the FDA and other federal agencies responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and resolving criminal enforcement actions related to civil False Claims Act (FCA) cases involving drugs and medical devices. Lauren also has extensive experience in prosecuting large-scale criminal healthcare fraud. She was a part of the teams that negotiated global settlements in the amounts of $1.5 billion from Abbott Laboratories for the unlawful promotion of Depakote and $950 million from Merck for the unlawful promotion of Vioxx. Lauren received multiple performance awards for her work on these cases.

Lauren litigated civil cases on behalf of the FTC, including discovery, pretrial proceedings, motions practice, trial, and settlement negotiations. She also has extensive experience as regulatory and litigation counsel for the CPSC. She litigated civil and criminal cases on behalf of the agency, served as a legislative liason during the passage of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, and she regularly counseled the CPSC on regulatory issues arising from its statutes and regulations. Lauren also chaired the Consumer Protection Branch’s legal intern program and served as a member of the Honors Program hiring committee and the Civil Division’s Diversity Committee.

Lauren received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2004. She received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Sewanee University in 2001.
