Joe Meadows is a trial attorney in Crowell & Moring's Washington, D.C. office, where he focuses on complex civil litigation, internet defamation/infringement, and expert evidence matters. Joe has tried nearly 20 cases before judges and juries, arbitrated commercial disputes, and argued trial and appellate matters in federal and state courts.

Joe has counseled clients and litigated matters involving internet defamation/infringement, online impersonation, domain name hacking, anonymity claims under the First Amendment, anti-slapp laws, Communications Decency Act, and Stored Communications Act. He is an active writer and speaker on these subjects.

Joe also has extensive experience with expert witnesses. He has worked with and examined actuaries, economists, engineers, forensic investigators, psychologists, materials scientists, and weapons experts. He has briefed and argued numerous Daubert motions. He has written several articles and spoken about expert witnesses. He is an editor for the American Bar Association (ABA) Expert Witness Committee. Joe has even trained expert panels on deposition practice.

Joe has litigated antitrust, bankruptcy, construction, customs, defamation, government contracts, health care, insurance, and federal taxation cases. Representative client examples include the following:

  • U.S. government contractor in pending defamation litigation over foreign sanctions laws.
  • United Airlines in pending antitrust MDL litigation over capacity reductions.
  • Leading defense contractor in False Claims Act litigation.
  • National hospital and health care insurer in False Claims Act litigation.
  • International technology company in successful customs classification litigation over oil and gas well materials.
  • Enron Creditors Recovery Corporation in bankruptcy litigation pursuing recovery of billions in structured finance payments.
  • Union Carbide in federal tax litigation seeking millions in research and development tax credits.
  • International generic drug manufacturer in multi-state litigation regarding Medicaid reimbursement.
  • Power plant owners in arbitration concerning millions in delay and liquidated damages.
  • Pro bono clients in criminal, immigration and family dispute litigation.

Recently, Joe tried and won a bankruptcy preference case in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Maryland, recovering a portion of fees and costs; successfully defended an adoption trial victory on appeal before the DC Court of Appeals; and successfully litigated a tariff classification dispute in the U.S. Court of International Trade.

Before joining Crowell & Moring, Joe was a litigation associate with a large national law firm in Washington, D.C. His practice focused on Chapter 11 bankruptcy, civil forfeiture, and collection cases.

Joe started his legal career as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division. He was hired through the Honors Program and tried a number of cases. He was the lead trial attorney and a consulting appellate attorney in the U.S. Supreme Court case, In re Young, 233 F.3d 56 (2000). For his work with the government, Joe received the Tax Division's Outstanding Attorney Award in 2000.
