The National Law Journal Names Jodi Daniel a Health Care/Life Sciences Trailblazer

Washington – March 2, 2021: The National Law Journal named Crowell & Moring partner Jodi Daniel to its 2021 list of Health Care/Life Sciences Trailblazers. The list features lawyers who “have made significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancements in their sector.”

Daniel is a partner in Crowell & Moring's Health Care Group and a member of the group’s Steering Committee. She leads the firm's Digital Health Practice and provides strategic, legal, and policy advice to all types of clients navigating the regulatory environment related to technology in the health care sector.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Daniel was the founding director of the Office of Policy in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a decade, after serving in the Office of the General Counsel at HHS for five years.

As the first senior counsel for health information technology and first director of health information technology policy, the publication notes that Daniel “helped spearhead important regulatory and policy changes in health information privacy and health information technology.” She was also one of the key drafters of the original Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rules and Enforcement Rules and developed the Nationwide Privacy and Security Framework for Electronic Exchange of Health Information.

The National Law Journal notes that Daniel “leveraged her experiences at the HHS in promoting the use of remote monitoring and data technologies to work with health care and technology companies to pivot to virtual care approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In the profile, Daniel noted: “We helped them overcome legal and regulatory hurdles, including reimbursement, licensing and security issues to get them up quickly. In one case, we helped a technology company accelerate its three-year plan for moving into telehealth to a three-month plan, and we had the pilot program running in three weeks.”

Looking ahead, Daniel expects to see “continued growth of telehealth and virtual care, with the increased availability of health data driving innovation.”

“We will see more technology companies partnering with health care systems to use data to create algorithms for treatment, diagnosis and management of care. And it will lead to more disruption in health care delivery and new digital therapy to supplement traditional treatments,” Daniel remarked.
