Yao Mou is an associate in Crowell & Moring’s Los Angeles office and is a member of the firm’s Antitrust & Competition and Litigation groups. She collaborates frequently with lawyers and professionals from Crowell & Moring’s Shanghai office and China practice, particularly on intellectual property (including trade secrets), cybersecurity/data privacy and other cross-border regulatory matters.

Yao’s Chinese background gives her the broad scope and a sophisticated mix of skills necessary to navigate the unique legal and practical challenges in cross-border regulatory and litigation disputes, particularly those involving antitrust matters. Yao’s recent experience includes:

  • Assisting in defending a Chinese multinational technology company in a trade secret litigation.
  • Assisting in defending a U.S. manufacturer in an antitrust investigation by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.
  • Assisting in successful defense of a group of scientists in a patent inventorship dispute brought by a Chinese scientist.
  • Counseling a Chinese real estate company on the risks of adverse litigation action.

Yao also maintains an active and varied U.S.-based pro bono practice, including representing a Mandarin-speaking client in a wage claim dispute in front of the California Labor Commission.

Yao received her J.D. from Loyola Law School, where she was an editor of the Loyola Law Review. While in law school, Yao worked as an extern for the Honorable Otis D. Wright II, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She also served as an intern at the antitrust section of the California Attorney General’s Office and the consumer protection section of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. Yao was actively involved in the moot court program, where she won the Best Brief Award in the Scott Moot Court Competition and represented Loyola Law School at the ABA’s National Moot Court Competition. She received her B.A. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Yao is a native Mandarin speaker and has translated numerous judicial opinions from Mandarin to English. Her translation work has been included in Transnational Intellectual Property Law: Text and Cases by Robert Mergers and Seagull Haiyan Song.
