Thomas Kinney is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Crowell & Moring, where he practices in the firm’s Insurance/Reinsurance Group. His practice involves litigation, arbitration, and counseling on a wide range of insurance and reinsurance issues, with an emphasis on complex insurance coverage disputes.

Tom has represented insurers in bankruptcy litigation and in coverage cases involving asbestos liability, environmental contamination, and sexual abuse claims relating to institutional policyholders. Currently, Tom is advising an insurer concerning underlying litigation involving concussion claims by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes.

Tom has also represented reinsurers in disputes over the proper administration of YRT reinsurance treaties, and their ability to raise rates thereunder. Additionally, Tom represents insurance trade associations in litigation, appellate, and other matters, and counsels property and casualty insurers on emerging risks and litigation trends.

Tom also has an active pro bono practice, with an emphasis on domestic relations issues. He currently represents a number of parents and custodial grandparents in custody actions at the trial court level, and also represents a custodial mother in a matter before the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Tom earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in 2012. During law school, he focused on alternative dispute resolution strategies, and was named to the school’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Board. He also won the Spanogle International Commercial Arbitration Moot in 2011 and represented GW Law at the Willem C. Vis International Moot in Hong Kong in 2012. Tom received his B.A. in political science (with honors) from the University of New Hampshire in 2008.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Tom served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable William W. Nooter on a civil law calendar and the Honorable Noel T. Johnson on a domestic relations (Child Abuse and Neglect) calendar.
