Sara A. Helmers is an associate in Crowell & Moring’s Government Contracts and Tax groups and is resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Sara’s practice spans bid protests, the post-merger integration of government contracts, federal and state tax controversy, and corporate planning on government contracts and tax matters. Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Sara worked as a student attorney in The George Washington Law School’s Small Business & Community Economic Development Clinic and as an intern in the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of General Counsel.

Recent experience includes:

  • Assisting a multinational management services firm with the acquisition of three technology companies.
  • Representing clients in protests of Air Force, U.S. Marshals Service, and Defense Intelligence Agency procurement decisions.
  • Contributing to a petition for certiorari and reply brief for the U.S. Supreme Court regarding unconstitutional retroactive taxation in IBM v. Michigan Department of Treasury.
  • Negotiating an installment payment plan for taxes owed to the IRS and the states of Maryland and Virginia.
Sara’s pro bono practice focuses on providing legal and governance assistance to nonprofit organizations.

Sara earned her B.A., Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude, from Wellesley College, her graduate certificate in museum studies from Tufts University, and her J.D., with highest honors and Order of the Coif, from The George Washington University Law School. During law school, Sara served as president of the Art and Entertainment Law Society and as a member of the George Washington Law Review.
