Michael Lee Huggins is an associate in the Insurance/Reinsurance Group in Crowell & Moring's San Francisco office, where Michael focuses his practice on complex insurance coverage litigation and reinsurance disputes before state and federal courts and arbitration tribunals. Michael works on matters involving comprehensive general liability, excess and umbrella liability, asbestos and environmental contamination, products liability, property damage, and facultative reinsurance. Michael advises clients on a variety of substantive and procedural issues, including choice of law, drop-down coverage, allocation, late notice, number of occurrences, and defense and indemnification obligations.

Michael has an active pro bono practice and is currently representing a family of four who escaped persecution by a violent gang in South America in applying for asylum.

Before joining Crowell & Moring, Michael worked for two years at the California Attorney General’s Office in San Francisco, where he represented California prison officials as the first-chair attorney in state and federal civil rights actions involving complex matters of evidence, civil procedure, and constitutional and statutory law. Michael successfully resolved several cases through motions to dismiss and motions for summary judgment and settled cases for significantly less than the client had authorized.

Michael graduated magna cum laude from New York University with an undergraduate degree in philosophy, earning highest honors for his thesis on the right to privacy. After participating in Teach For America, Michael attended Fordham Law School, where Michael published a journal note in the Fordham International Law Journal, competed in commercial mediation at the International Chamber of Commerce, and served as the editor of Fordham Moot Court’s corporate-law competition.

Michael has served as a judicial extern to the Honorable George B. Daniels of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, as a judicial extern to the Honorable Denny Chin of the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and as a legal intern at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
