Overview

Matthew David is a counsel in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. His practice focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the computer, electrical, and mechanical arts. Mr. David also provides litigation support in post-grant proceedings at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. 

Mr. David has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for large technology companies. He also has experience filing trademarks and rendering validity and freedom-to-operate opinions.

Mr. David has a vast understanding of patent examiner culture and practice based on his twelve-year tenure at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Prior to practicing law, Mr. David served as an examination specialist, where he reviewed many of the highest profile patent applications pending before the agency. He also served as a primary examiner in the areas of computer I/O, communication protocols, and power management. At the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, Mr. David maintained a stellar record, having been affirmed or affirmed-in-part on nearly every appeal.

Aside from his USPTO experience, Mr. David possesses an unusually high level of practical experience. While studying for his undergraduate degree, he completed engineering internships at Intel Corporation and Lutron Electronics and co-founded a technology startup. He also established an automotive parts fabrication business and a powder coating service. An engineer at heart, Mr. David’s hands-on experience with customized engine management systems, modifying transmissions, designing custom suspensions, rebuilding hydraulic systems, and fabricating fuel-delivery components helps him to deliver the creative, informed, and high-horsepower work product that his clients rely on and trust. 

Mr. David is registered as a patent attorney authorized to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and is a member of both the Virginia bar and of the DeLorean Owners Association.
